Intensely luxurious, Lapis was one of the first gems used for jewelry, appearing throughout the Mediterranean as early as 4000 B.C. Archeologists have uncovered carvings and decorative chains featuring Lapis Lazuli in the areas of Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece and Rome. While blue is one of nature’s most abundant colors – think of the plentiful blues of water and sky – it is one of the most difficult colors to reproduce. Both artists and fabric weavers alike have had very few natural ways to express their brilliant blue dreams. For this reason, Lapis’s value to the art world is immeasurable. Prior to synthetic dies, ground Lapis was the only mineral that could produce the vivid blue pigment ultramarine. Ultramarine was treasured because, unlike other paints, its color intensified over time instead of fading. The pigment was so rare; it was reserved for the most cherished paintings.

Toggle Back are similar to the whale tail clasp, but the post is a hollow frame, and the closing mechanism is a narrow cylinder of metal that nests inside the frame. To lock the links in place, the cylinder is flipped outward, leaving the frame in place as the post.

The high-quality stainless steel used to craft this is known as 316L. The quality refers to the purity and hardness of the stainless steel; the higher the grade-number, the purer the steel, this is the highest grade given. 316L is also known as surgical steel, it is the same grade surgeons use and is gentle on sensitive skin.
