Andrew was a fisherman who was born in Bethsaida, near the Sea of Galilee. He was a follower of John the Baptist and became the first disciple of Christ. As one of the Twelve, Andrew was admitted to the closest familiarity with Our Lord during His public life; he was present at the Last Supper; beheld the risen Lord; witnessed the Ascension; shared in the graces and gifts of the first Pentecost, and helped, amid threats and persecution, to establish the Faith in Palestine. It is believed that after Our Lord ascended into Heaven, St. Andrew went to Greece to preach the gospel. Andrew had told the wife of Aegeates, the Proconsul of Greece, that she did not have to suffer abuse from her drunken husband and did not have to give herself to him under those conditions. For this, Aegeates had him crucified, stretched and tied to the Saltire (X-shaped) cross, where he suffered for two days until he died. Due to the support he gave to Aegeates’ wife, Andrew is considered the patron saint of unmarried ladies or maidens. Two countries have chosen St. Andrew as their patron, Russia and Scotland.
