St. Matthew, an apostle and author of the First Gospel, is the patron saint of bankers, tax collectors, accountants, customs guards, security officers and stockbrokers. Matthew was a Jew who worked for the occupying Roman forces as a publican, collecting taxes from other Jews. Considered corrupt traitors who robbed their own people while making a large personal profit, such publicans were despised and shunned by their fellow Jews. When Jesus called Matthew to follow him, the Jews were surprised to see him with a publican, but he explained that he had come "not to call the just, but sinners." Saint Matthew is said to have preached the Gospel to the Hebrews for as many as 15 years after the death of Christ. It is assumed that he was martyred liked the other apostles (with the exception of St. John). His Feast Day is September 21.
