According to a letter generally accepted to have been written by St. Patrick himself, at the age of sixteen he was captured from his home in Britain by a group of pirates. The raiders took him to Ireland where he was enslaved and held captive to work as a shepherd. After six years, he escaped on a ship and returned home.
