In paintings of this scene, the Virgin’s hands are joined in prayer, she has long brown hair, wears a white gown and blue robe, and a golden crown in Byzantine style. According to legend, a traveling aerial acrobat and his family were performing their stunts high above pointed spears when his youngest daughter fell on the blades and died. The parents brought her body to the chapel of San Juan for burial. Seeing movement beneath the burial cloths, the parents unwrapped the child and found her alive and well. Other miracles followed and today the town is visited by pilgrims all year, with more than a million visitors arriving to pay homage on Candlemas Day, February 2.
