St. James was an Apostle and brother of St. John, and is the patron saint of pilgrims and laborers. Among the apostles he held a special place. When Jesus raised Jairus' daughter when all thought her dead, he allowed only James, John, and Peter to come with him. When he went up to the mountain to pray, he wanted James, John, and Peter to go with him. After the crucifixion, James made a pilgrimage to Spain to spread the gospel. Upon his return, he was beheaded by King Herod Agrippa, becoming the first apostle to be martyred . St. James, or St. lago (the Spanish form of his name), is the military patron of Spain. A legend says that during the battle of Clavijo he suddenly appeared on a white charger, waving aloft a white standard, and led the Christians to victory. This was in response to the soldiers' invocation of his name, "Sant lago!" being the battle-cry of that day. Hence the name of the ancient city (Santiago) which contains the cathedral founded in his honor. His Feast Day is July 25.
