The Men's Jewelry Store (Unisex Jewelry)

Caridad Del Cobre means literally ‘Charity of the Copper.’ Our Lady of Charity is Cuba’s patron saint. According to tradition dating back to 1684, three fishermen survived a storm when they found a small statue of the Blessed Virgin floating upon the water. A church was erected for her in El Cobre where a royal edict from King Charles IV of Spain decreed that Cuban slaves were to be freed from the copper mines. In 1954, American author Ernest Hemingway donated his Nobel Prize in Literature medal to the image of the Virgin Mary at the shrine of Caridad del Cobre in Cuba. The medal was stolen in 1986, but recovered days later upon the threat of Raul Castro, after which it was hidden from view. The medal is rarely present in the image and only worn during solemn and Papal occasions. After a visit to Cuba, Pope Francis placed a replica of the statue in the Vatican Gardens in 2014. The feast day of Our Lady of Charity is September 8.
