In paintings of this scene, the Virgin’s hands are joined in prayer, she has long brown hair, wears a white gown and blue robe, and a golden crown in Byzantine style. Above her, two angels hold a banner with the Latin inscription in blue enamel: Mater Immaculate ora pro nobis (Immaculate Mother pray for us). Records show that in 1543 a priest brought a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary to the village of San Juan de los Lagos, a town in the Los Altos region of Jalisco, Mexico. According to legend, a traveling aerial acrobat and his family were performing their stunts high above pointed spears when his youngest daughter fell on the blades and died. Seeing movement beneath the burial cloths, the parents unwrapped the child and found her alive and well. Other miracles followed and today the town is visited by pilgrims all year, with more than a million visitors arriving to pay homage on Candlemas Day, February 2.
