The patron saint of boy scouts, soldiers, farmers and England, St. George served in the army of the Roman Emperor Diocletian, and was one of the emperor's favorite soldiers but was beheaded when he announced his faith as a Christian. A popular legend of Saint George is that a fierce dragon nested at the spring that provided water for the city. Armies tried to kill the dragon but failed. To get the dragon away from the spring long enough to collect water, the citizens offered the dragon a sheep. When there were no more sheep, they chose a maiden by drawing lots. One day, the princess was chosen. St. George came to the rescue when he was told of the story by a hermit. St. George made the sign of the cross and prayed for help. He was able to slay the dragon in time to save the princess and the citizens all converted to Christianity. He is honored throughout the world through paintings, coins, literature, schools, churches and entire countries. His Feast Day is April 23.
