Nikolaos of Myra (Turkey), a 4th-century Christian saint and Greek Bishop, is the patron saint of Russia, Greece, Apulia, Sicily and Loraine. He is also the patron saint of sailors, merchants, archers, repentant thieves, children, brewers, pawnbrokers and students. He dedicated his life to serving God and became known for his generosity to those in need, his love for children, and his concern for sailors and ships. His reputation for secret gift-giving became the model for Santa Claus. According to folklore, Nicholas learned of a man who couldn’t afford dowries to get husbands for his three daughters so he planned to turn them over to prostitution. He did the same for the second daughter. When the third daughter came of age, he climbed the roof and threw the gold down the chimney where it lodged in her stocking drying by the fireplace. Thus, our Christmas tradition of hanging stockings and why images often show him holding three purses, three coins or three balls of gold. The Feast Day of St. Nicholas is December 6.
