Stainless Steel Antiqued Spanish Miraculous Medal Necklace, 18"

Probably the most popular-selling medal of all time. In 1830, the Virgin Mary appeared to a nun named Sister (now Saint) Catherine Laboure in Paris and showed her a vision of this exact medal which she directed to be struck and distributed. The front depicts an image of Mary inside an oval frame, standing upon a globe, wearing many rings of different colors, most of which show rays of light over the globe. Around the margin of the frame are the words “O Mary! conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee!" The back features an ‘M’ surmounted by a cross, with two hearts and twelve stars. The large letter "M" symbolizes Mary as Mother, Mediatrix; the cross and bar is for Jesus' cross of redemption; the 12 stars represent the 12 apostles, who formed the first Church; the left heart is the Sacred Heart, who died for our sins.

The high-quality stainless steel used to craft this is known as 316L. The quality refers to the purity and hardness of the stainless steel; the higher the grade-number, the purer the steel, this is the highest grade given. 316L is also known as surgical steel, it is the same grade surgeons use and is gentle on sensitive skin. Stainless steel is a highly robust metal that retains its shape, will not tarnish, and is virtually impervious to wear and tear. It can easily be polished to restore the original luster after years of wear.
