Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu, commonly known as Mother Teresa (26 August 1910 – 5 September 1997), was born in what is now Macedonia, and at age 18 joined the Sisters of Loreto Convent in Ireland. Upon taking her religious vows, she chose the name Teresa. Already fluent in the Albanian and Serbian languages, she learned English, Bengali and Hindi. She became a citizen of India and spent her life in service to the poor and the sick. Mother Teresa was the recipient of many honors and awards, including the 1979 Nobel Peace Prize. Beginning 5 September 2013, the anniversary of her death has been designated as the International Day of Charity by the United Nations General Assembly.
