Our Lady of Divine Providence refers to Mary, Mother of Jesus. Devotion to Our Lady of the Divine Providence began in Italy in the thirteenth century. Legend says that seven wealthy merchants took a vow of poverty in a beggar order of the Catholic Church, trusting in a bountiful God who would provide for all their needs. When the friars prayed to the Blessed Virgin for help, two baskets of food were discovered at their door. Henceforth, she was known as Our Lady of Providence and sometimes also as "Queen of the Home." Around 1580, an Italian painter Scipione Pulzone (1550-1588) created Mater Divinae Providentiae (Mother of the Divine Providence), which depicted the Madonna cradling the Divine Infant Jesus. In 1664, this exquisite painting fell into the hands of the Barnabite Fathers at San Carlo a Catinari in Rome, who thereupon erected a humble shrine. Soon Romans came to visit it and were rewarded with extraordinary favors. She is the patroness of Indiana, Rhode Island, Puerto Rico, St. Benedict’s Abbey in Atchison, KS and the Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence, Rhode Island. Her feast day is November 19. She is also honored on January 2.
