Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the title given to the Blessed Virgin Mary as patroness of the Carmelite Order. The first Carmelites were Christian hermits living on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land during the late 12th and early to mid-13th centuries. Our Lady of Mt. Carmel is also the patron saint of Chile. The city of Palmi commemorates the "miracle of Our Lady of Mount Carmel" each year on November 16 with firecrackers, lights and festive stalls. This celebration dates back to 1894 when citizens reported eye movements and color changes on the face of a statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. In the evening of November 16, the faithful improvised a procession and carried the statue through the streets. When the procession reached the end of the city, a violent earthquake shook Palmi, ruining most of the houses along the way of the procession. Only nine people died out of a population of about 15,000 as almost all of the population had been on the street as a result of the procession.
