St. Paul, originally known as Saul of Tarsus, was an apostle (though not one of the twelve apostles) who taught the gospel of Christ to the first-century world. According to writings in the New Testament, Paul was dedicated to the persecution of the early disciples of Jesus. He even participated in the stoning of Stephen, the first Christian martyr. However, while traveling from Jerusalem to Damascus on a mission to "bring them which were there bound unto Jerusalem," the resurrected Jesus appeared to him in a great light. He was struck blind, but after three days his sight was restored by Ananias of Damascus. This led to his conversion and he became a tireless preacher and missionary. He suffered many adversities and hardships, but founded several churches in Asia Minor and Europe. It is believed that he was beheaded in Rome during the reign of Nero. Much of the writing in the New Testament has been attributed to Paul. His letters have been characterized as being the most influential books of the New Testament after the Gospels of Matthew and John. His Feast Day is June 29.
