Mary was given the name 'Magdalen' because she lived in a town called Magdale, in northern Galilee. She was a disciple of Jesus and traveled with him as one of his followers. In the four Gospels, she is named at least 12 times, more than most of the apostles. She was present at Christ’s crucifixion and the first person to whom Christ appeared after his resurrection. Although St. Luke records that she was a notorious sinner, today’s religious scholars doubt that she was either a prostitute or the unnamed woman who anointed the feet of Jesus with expensive perfume. This confusion may result from mis-identification with Mary of Egypt, a repentant prostitute, and Mary of Bethany, who is believed to have washed the Lord’s feet. Legend says she spent the rest of her life in France as a contemplative in a cave known as Sainte-Baume. She was given the Holy Eucharist daily by angels as her only food, and died when she was 72. Mary Magdalen’s Feast Day is July 22.
