Sterling Silver Our Lady Of Guadalupe Medal (34.25x25.75 MM)

Our Lady of Guadalupe is considered the patroness of Mexico and the Continental Americas and the protector of unborn children. Accounts state that in 1531, the Virgin Mary appeared to Juan Diego in what is now Mexico City. She left a miraculous image of herself on his tilma (a cloak woven from hemp) which survives to this day. It can be seen in the magnificent Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in México City which is visited by 20 million pilgrims per year. Not even the accident in 1791, when muriatic acid fell on the tilma, nor the terrorist attack by a bomb in 1921 has been able to destroy it. In 1977, the tilma was examined using infrared photography and digital enhancement techniques. They showed that patches of varnish had been applied over the eyes of the image to protect the surface but no evidence of a painting was found. Scientists are unable to explain the image or its color values and state of preservation over 500 years. Her Feast Day is December 12.
