Bernadette Soubirous , also known as Sister Marie-Bernard of the Convent of Saint-Gildard, is the patron saint of shepherds. She was born in France and suffered ill health all her life. In her childhood she reported seeing visions of the Blessed Mary. According to her account, Our Lady told her to dig in the mud which unearthed a spring that was the source of many miracles for those who used its water. Bernadette requested the local priest to build a chapel at the site. She took the religious habit of a postulant and joined the Sisters of Charity. The Mother Superior gave her the name Marie-Bernarde in honor of her godmother who was named "Bernarde." She died of a long-term illness at the age of 35. A dozen movies about her life have been made. Her Feast Day is April 16.
