Lucia of Syracuse (283–304) is the patron saint of the blind and those with eye trouble. In addition to being the patroness of Syracuse in Sicily, Saint Lucy is also the patron saint of the Caribbean island of Saint Lucia, one of the Windward Islands in the Lesser Antilles. Lucy was a young Christian martyr who died during the Diocletianic persecution. The oldest archaeological evidence comes from the Greek inscriptions from the catacombs of St. John in Syracuse. According to legend, she had taken vows of chastity but her mother promised her in marriage to a wealthy pagan. When Lucy rejected him and gave away much of her dowry to the poor, he reported her Christianity to the governor of Syracuse and she was put to death by sword. In medieval accounts, Saint Lucy's eyes are gouged out prior to her execution. Throughout many countries, special customs, devotions and holidays are observed, and festivals and processions are held to celebrate her Feast Day on December 13.
