One of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ, St. Peter is recognized in the early Christian church as the leader of the disciples and, by the Roman Catholic Church, as the first of its unbroken succession of popes. He is associated with founding the Church of Antioch and later the church in Rome. It is believed that St. Peter's original name was Simon and that he was a fisherman who met Jesus through his brother Andrew.
