St. Barbara is an early Christian saint and martyr. Accounts place her in the 3rd century in Nicomedia, present-site Turkey or in Heliopolis in Egypt. According to legend she was kept secluded in a tower by her tyrannical father, Dioscorus. Here, in her forced solitude, she gave herself to prayer and study, and contrived to receive instruction and Baptism in secret by a Christian prieSt. Barbara resisted her father's wish that she marry. Then on one occasion, during his absence, she had three windows inserted into a bathhouse her father was constructing. Her purpose was to honor the Trinity. Enraged by her action and by her conversion, Dioscorus denounced her before the civil tribunal. She was tortured and finally be-headed by her father who acted as her executioner. While angels took her soul to Paradise, lightning struck and killed Dioscorus. Because of her association with lightning.
