St. Charles Borromeo—Archbishop of Milan, Cardinal-Priest of the Title of St. Prassede, Papal Secretary of State under Pius IV—was born in 1538 in the Castle of Arona, in Italy, and died at Milan in 1584. At 12 years, he received the tonsure, the cutting of hair on top of the head, marking him for priesthood. Besides studying theology, he earned a degree in canon and civil law. Subsequently, he became a cardinal, and an archbishop. His sermons have been translated into many languages. A leading figure during the Counter-Reformation, he helped rid the Catholic Church of the evils and abuses so prevalent in those times. One of his reforms resulted in the founding of seminaries for the education of priests.
