Nikolaos of Myra (Turkey), a 4th-century Christian saint and Greek Bishop, is the patron saint of Russia, Greece, Apulia, Sicily and Loraine. He is also the patron saint of sailors, merchants, archers, repentant thieves, children, brewers, pawnbrokers and students. He dedicated his life to serving God and became known for his generosity to those in need, his love for children, and his concern for sailors and ships. His reputation for secret gift-giving became the model for Santa Claus. According to folklore, Nicholas learned of a man who couldn’t afford dowries to get husbands for his three daughters so he planned to turn them over to prostitution. Under cover of darkness, Nicholas threw a bag of gold through window of the man's house, providing a dowry for the eldest daughter. He did the same for the second daughter.
