14k Yellow Gold Our Lady Of Perpetual Help Medal Pendant (17X15MM)

Our Lady of Perpetual Help is a title of the Blessed Virgin Mary given by Pope Pius IX. The icon features the child Jesus fleeing into his Mother's protective arms as the Archangels Michael and Gabriel show Him the instruments of crucifixion (the cross, nails, lance, sponge). The Greek letters spell out the first letters of Mary and Jesus' names. The icon has been in Rome since 1499, and is permanently enshrined in the church of Sant' Alfonso di Liguori. In 1990, the picture of Our Mother of Perpetual Help was taken down from above the main altar to satisfy the many requests for new photographs of the icon. It was then that deterioration of the image was discovered; the wood, as well as the paint, had suffered from environmental changes and prior attempts at restoration. The subsequent restoration by the Vatican Museum confirmed that the wood of the Icon of Perpetual Help could safely be dated from between 1325-1480.
