Jean-Baptist-Marie Vianney, born in France, is the patron saint of priests. By 1790, many French priests were forced to hide from the government in order to carry out the sacraments. Vianney’s First Communion and his Confirmation had to be done in secret and he began to look upon priests as heroes. It was not until he was 20 that his father allowed him to get any schooling but his studies were interrupted when he was drafted into the Army. He deserted to a mountain village and opened a school for children. When amnesty was granted, he subsequently entered the seminary. After being appointed a parish priest, he became widely known and 20,000 pilgrims a year traveled to see him. He spent 12-16 hours a day in the confessional and even received the French Legion of Honor. There are at least 21 churches and schools named for him in the United States alone. His Feast Day is August 4.
