St. John is called the Apostle of Charity. The writer of the Fourth Gospel, John the Evangelist was the youngest of Christ's original twelve apostles and is thought to be the only one to live into old age and not killed for his faith. He was one of the privileged few present at the Transfiguration and the Agony in the garden. He became the "beloved disciple" and the only one of the Twelve who did not forsake the Savior in the hour of His Passion, and at the last stood by the cross with Mary. From the cross, the dying Jesus bequeathed His Mother to the care of the faithful apostle. John’s later life was passed chiefly in Jerusalem and then at Ephesus where he died. He founded many churches in Asia Minor. Besides the Fourth Gospel, he wrote three Epistles, and the Book of Revelation is also attributed to him. His Feast Day is December 27.
