Martin de Porres Velázquez, (December 9, 1579 – November 3, 1639) is the patron saint of mixed-race people and of innkeepers, barbers and public health workers. His father was a Spanish gentleman and his mother a colored freed-woman from Panama. A lay brother of the Dominican Order, Peru as a barber, farm laborer, almoner, and infirmarian. Among many miracles attributed to him were those of levitation, bilocation, miraculous knowledge, instantaneous cures, and an ability to communicate with animals. Today, St. Martin is commemorated by a building that houses the medical, nursing, and rehabilitation science schools of the Dominican University of Santo Tomas in the Philippines.
