St. Elizabeth, also known as Mother Seton, is the patron saint of loss of parents and of seafarers. She was the first native-born citizen of the United States to be canonized by the Roman Catholic Church. She was born in New York City, lost her mother when she was three years old, and when her father subsequently separated from her stepmother and went to London, she was sent to live with her uncle’s family. Elizabeth married at 19 and became a widow nine years later. She converted to Catholicism, moved to Maryland and founded the first American congregation of religious sisters, the Sisters of Charity. She also established the first parochial school system in the United States. She died of tuberculosis at the age of 46 and her Feast Day is January 4.
